MIRI: Members of the public are reminded to keep pets within their house compound as mass removal of stray dogs and cats will be carried out from Nov 10 to 20 at Miri and Subis.

Head of Veterinary Services Dr Sylmie Al-Harir of Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak said in a press release yesterday that any dog found roaming outside will be caught and removed by the local council (MCC) and the department in the fight against rabies.

“If it is necessary to exercise your dog, please ensure that the dog is securely leashed. More importantly, all dogs with owners must be licensed with the local council,” said Dr Sylmie.

On pet adoption, she reminded the public to ensure the pet’s vaccination status and sources are known as well as to constantly monitor their pet for signs of rabies.

“The signs of rabies include turning aggressive, biting of objects, excessive salivation and incoordination. An annual booster is required for vaccinated pets to ensure they are fully protected,” she said in the press release.

For anti-rabies vaccination, pets can be taken to the nearest Divisional Veterinary office from Mondays to Fridays, 8.30am to 11.30am, or the nearest private veterinary clinics.

In the press statement released after a meeting  chaired by Miri Divisional Administrative officer Edward Tawang, Dr Sylmie also reminded members of the public not to dump unwanted pets but surrender them to the local council (MCC) or contact the nearest Veterinary Divisional office for further action.

“We need public cooperation to eradicate rabies,” she said.
